Duty free allowance rules and regulations for alcohol and tobacco products.

To make sure that nothing can spoil your trip abroad, it is essential to previously read the Customs guidelines for bringing in the goods into the countries you plan to visit.   

Most of the countries have quantitative restrictions on bringing in certain categories of the goods (including, tobacco and alcohol). Also, passenger age, an alcoholic beverage strength (strong alcoholic drinks/spirits - from 22%, low-alcohol – less than 22% of alcohol content) and other drivers can be taken into account. If the limit of brought in goods is exceeded, this may result in extra costs. You may be requested to pay for the goods with high entry duties and, in case of refusal, such goods can be seized.     

It is strictly prohibited to bring alcoholic or tobacco products into certain countries.   

Alcoholic beverage and tobacco allowance per one passenger by different countries:

EU countries (Austria, Belgium, Hungary, Germany, Greece, Denmark, Ireland, Spain, Italy, Cyprus, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxemburg, Malta, the Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Finland, France, Croatia, Czech Republic, Sweden, Estonia):

It is allowed to bring in the EU countries: spirits and other liquors over 22% of alcohol content - 1L or alcoholic drinks less than 22% alcohol - 2L, wine - 4L, beer - 16L. 

Tobacco allowances:  

200 cigarettes, or
100 cigarillos, or
50 cigars, or
250g tobacco.

Brining in the goods into the EEU (Eurasian Economic Union (Russian Federation, Belarus, Kazakhstan and Armenia) countries for personal purposes by the citizens of Russia, Belarus, Kazakhstan and Armenia is unrestricted. For the adults from the countries, that are not members of the EEU, it is allowed to bring in no more than 3 L of any alcoholic beverages. Bringing in tobacco products is limited by 200 cigarettes or 50 cigars or 50 cigarillos or 250g of tobacco.                    

It is allowed for the citizens of the countries, that are not members of the EEU, to bring in Armenia 2L or 1 bottle of alcohol content (if the volume of the bottle is more than 2L); 10 cigars, 400 cigarillos, 400 cigarettes.    

Persons over 18 are allowed to bring in Australia up to 2.25L of any alcohol; 50 cigarettes or 50 grams of tobacco products and one opened pack of cigarettes with no more than 25 cigarettes.   

Persons over 18 may bring in Azerbaijan 3L of alcoholic beverages; 600 cigarettes.     

Allowance for Albania is 1L of spirits, 2L of wine or other low-alcohol products; 200 cigarettes or 50 cigars or 250g of tobacco.     

Allowance for Algeria is 2L of wine or 1L of spirits; 200 cigarettes or 100 cigarillos or 50 cigars or 250g of tobacco of the same trademark.    

It is allowed to bring in Angola 1L of spirits, 2L of wine; 400 cigarettes or 500g of tobacco or 500 cigars.    

Andorra – 1.5L of spirits and 5L of wine; tobacco products - 300 cigarettes or 150 cigarillos or 75 cigars or 400g of tobacco.

Argentina – 2L of any alcohol; 200 cigarettes or 25 cigars.

Bangladesh - alcoholic products are allowed for bringing in by non-Muslims and only in case of visiting the country with tourist purposes. The duty free allowance is 5.91L (1/3 gl); tobacco products – 200 cigarettes or 50 cigars or 225g of tobacco.    

Barbados – 1L of alcohol is allowed; tobacco is prohibited. 

Bahrein - alcoholic products are allowed for non-Muslims in the amount of 1Lof any alcohol and 6 cans of beer; tobacco – 400 cigarettes, 50 cigars or 225g of tobacco in open packs. For Muslims it is strictly prohibited to bring in alcohol.    

Benin – 0.5L of spirits and 0.5L of wine; 200 cigarettes, 25 cigars, 250g of tobacco.

Bolivia – 3L of alcohol; 400 cigarettes, 500g of tobacco or 50 cigars.

Bosnia and Herzegovina – 1L of alcohol; 200 cigarettes, 20 cigars, 200g of tobacco.

Botswana -1L of spirits and 2L of wine; 200 cigarettes, 20 cigars, 250g of tobacco.  

Brazil – 12 of alcohol; 200 cigarettes, 25 cigars or cigarillos, 250g of tobacco.      

Bringing in alcohol and cigarettes in Brunei is now allowed. Alcoholic products are allowed for non-Muslims, in particular, 2 bottles of spirits and 12 cans of beer. The country abides by the dry law, alcoholic beverages, including beer, are unavailable and drinking them in public is criminally liable. Besides, these goods must be reported along with payment of the relevant taxes and duties. All brought in tobacco products are also liable to duty.            

Burundi – no constraints to bringing in alcoholic and tobacco products.

Vanuatu – up to 2L of spirits, 2L of wine and 9L of beer; 250 cigarettes or 100 cigarillos or 25 cigars or 250g of tobacco.  

United Kingdom – 1L of spirits or 2L of low-alcohol drinks (including sparkling wine, liqueur), 4L of wine, 16L of beer; 200 cigarettes or 100 cigarillos or 50 cigars or 250g of tobacco.   

Venezuela – 2L of alcohol; 200 cigarettes or 25 cigars.   

Vietnam – 1.5L of spirits or 2L of less than 22%; 400 cigarettes or 100 cigars or 500g of tobacco.    

Gabon – 2L of alcohol; 200 cigarettes.   

Haiti - 1L of any alcohol; 200 cigarettes or 50 cigars or 1kg of tobacco.    

Ghana - persons over the age of 16 may bring in 1.1L of any alcohol; 400 cigarettes or 100 cigars or 454g of tobacco.         

Guinea - 1L of any spirits, 2L of wine; 200 cigarettes.     

Gibraltar - 1L of spirits or 2L of fortified/sparkling wine and 2L of non-sparkling wine; 200 cigarettes or 100 cigarillos, 50 cigars or 200g of tobacco.  

Hong Kong - 1L with alcohol content over 30; 19 cigarettes or 1 cigar or 25g of tobacco.     

Honduras - 5L of any alcohol; 500g of tobacco products.   

Georgia - 4L of alcohol; 200 cigarettes, 50 cigarillos, 50 cigars, 250g of tobacco.

Djibouti - 1L of spirits, 2L of liqueur and fortified wine (less than 22 alcohol content), 2 L of dry wine; 200 cigarettes.   

Dominican Republic – 2L of any alcohol; 200 cigarettes.  

Egypt – 1L of any alcohol (for persons over 20 years old); 200 cigarettes or 50 cigars or 200g of tobacco (for persons over 15 years old).    

Zambia - 1L of any alcohol; 200 cigarettes or 450g of tobacco.

Zimbabwe – 5 bottles of any alcohol; 10 packs of cigarettes.  

Israel – 1L of spirits and 2L of wine (for persons over 18); 250g of tobacco products.  

Yemen - 2L of any alcohol; 2 cartons of cigarettes.  

India – 2L of any alcohol; 100 cigarettes or 25 cigars or 125g of tobacco.   

Indonesia – 1L of any alcohol; 200 cigarettes or 50 cigars or 100g of tobacco.

Jordan - 1L of alcohol; 200 cigarettes or 25 cigars or 200g of tobacco.

Iraq - 1L of alcohol; 200 cigarettes or 50 cigars or 250g of tobacco.

Iran – any alcoholic drinks are prohibited.

Iceland - 1L of spirits, 1L of wine or 1L of spirits, 6L of beer or 1.5L of wine, 6L of beer or 3 L of wine (for persons over 20 years old); 200 cigarettes or 250g of tobacco products (for persons over 18).     

Cape Verde – no limitations to bringing in alcoholic or tobacco products.  

Cambodia - 2L of wine; 400 cigarettes, 100 cigars or 400g of tobacco.

Cameroon - 1L of alcohol; 200 cigarettes or 50 cigars or 500g of tobacco.

Canada – 1.14L of spirits, 1.5L of wine, 8.52L of beer, 200 cigarettes, 50 cigars or cigarillos, 200g of tobacco (for persons aged 19 years and above).

Qatar – bringing in any alcoholic drinks is prohibited.

Kenya – 1L of alcohol; 200 cigarettes or 50 cigars or 250g of tobacco.

Kyrgyzstan - 2L of alcohol; 200 cigarettes.

China – up to 1.5L of any alcohol, 400 cigarettes and in case of planned duration of stay in the country for over 6 months – 600 cigarettes.  

Congo - 1 L of alcohol; 100 cigarettes, 25 cigars or 250g of tobacco.

Costa Rica - 3L of alcohol; 400 cigarettes or 50 cigars, or 500g of tobacco.

Cote d'Ivoire - 5L of alcohol; 20 packs of cigarettes.  

Kuwait – any alcoholic drinks are prohibited. 500 cigarettes or 2 pounds of tobacco are allowed for bringing in.   

Laos - 2L of alcohol; 200 cigarettes.  

Liberia - 1L of alcohol; 200 cigarettes or 25 cigars, or 250g of tobacco.  

Lebanon - 2L of alcohol; 800 cigarettes or 1kg of tobacco or 50 cigars or 100 cigarillos.    

Libya - any alcoholic drinks are prohibited for bringing in.

Macedonia - 1L of alcohol; 200 cigarettes.

Mauritius - 1L of spirits, 2L of wine or beer; 200 cigarettes or 250g of tobacco.

Mauritania – any alcoholic drinks are prohibited. 

Madagascar - 2L of alcohol, 20 packs or 2 cartons of cigarettes.

Malaysia - 1L of spirits or 1L of wine and liqueur; 200 cigarettes or 50 cigars or 225g of tobacco.

Mali - 1L of spirits, 2L of liqueur and fortified wine, 2L of dry wine; 200 cigarettes.

Morocco - 1L of any alcohol; 200g of tobacco products.

Mexico - 3L of alcohol; 200 cigarettes, 50 cigars or 200g of tobacco.

Mozambique – 0.7L of spirits and 2L of wine; 200 cigarettes.

Moldova - 2L of any alcohol and 5L of beer; 50 cigars, 200 cigarettes.

Monaco – for persons over the age of 17, arriving from the countries outside of the EU Customs area, it is allowed to bring in 1L of spirits and 2L of wine; 200 cigarettes or 100 cigarillos or 50 cigars or 250g of tobacco. Persons over the age of 17, entering Monaco from the states – members of the EU, are allowed to bring in up to 10L of spirits as duty free goods (with the alcoholic content over 22%) or 20L of fortified wine, or 60L of sparkling wine, or 90L of table wine, or 110L of beer; 800 cigarettes or 400 cigarillos, or 200 cigars and 1kg of tobacco.   

Mongolia – 1L of alcohol; 100 cigarettes, 1 000g of tobacco.

Myanmar – 2L of alcoholic drinks; 400 cigarettes, 50 cigars or 250g of tobacco.  

Namibia – 1L of spirits and 2 L of wine; 400 cigarettes or 50 cigars, or 350g of tobacco.  

Nepal – 1.15L of alcohol or 12 cans of beer; 50 cigars, 200 cigarettes, 20g of tobacco.   

Nigeria – 1L of alcohol and 1L of wine; 200g of tobacco or 50 cigars, or 200 cigarettes.

Netherlands Antilles – 2L of alcohol; 200 cigarettes, 50 cigars or 250g of tobacco.

Nicaragua – 3L of alcohol; 200 cigarettes or 500g of tobacco.

New Zealand – 4.5L of wine or beer, 1.125 L of any other alcohol, including spirits; 50 cigarettes or 50g of cigars/tobacco.  

New Caledonia – 1L of spirits and 2 bottles of wine; 1 000 cigarettes or 250 cigars, or 2 kg of tobacco.   

Norway – 1L of alcoholic beverages with alcoholic content from 22 to 60, or 1.5L of alcoholic drinks with alcoholic content from 2.5 to 22, or 3L of alcoholic drinks with alcoholic content from 2.5 to 22. Allowance for tobacco products is 200 cigarettes or 250g of tobacco, 200 sheets of rolling paper.    

Oman – 2 L of any alcohol; 300 cigarettes.

Pakistan – any type of spirits is prohibited. 200 cigarettes or 50 cigars, or 1 pound (about 450g) of tobacco products are allowed for bringing in.     

Palau – 2 L of spirits and 2 L of wine; 200 cigarettes.

Panama – 3 bottles of alcohol; 500 cigarettes or 50 cigars, or 500g of tobacco.

Papua New Guinea – 2 L of any alcohol; 250 cigarettes or 250g of tobacco. 

Peru – 3L of alcohol; 20 packs of cigarettes or 50 cigars, or 250g of tobacco.   

Southern Korea –1L of alcohol, 200 cigarettes, 50 cigars or 250g of tobacco are allowed for persons over the age of 19.    

Samoa – 1L of spirits and 2L of alcohol less than 22; 200 cigarettes.   

Saudi Arabia – it is prohibited to bring in spirits. Irrelevant of the age, it is allowed to bring in 600 cigarettes or 100 cigars, or 500g of tobacco. 

Saint Martin – 1L of spirits or 2.25L of wine; 200 cigarettes or 100 cigarillos, or 50 cigars, or 250g of tobacco.  

Seychelles – 2L of alcohol; 200 cigarettes or 250g of tobacco.   

Serbia – 1L of alcohol; 200 cigarettes or 50 cigars, or 250g of tobacco are allowed for persons over the age of 16. 

Singapore – all persons over the age of 18, except for those coming from Malaysia, are allowed to bring in 1L of spirits, 1L of wine, 1L of beer; or 2L of wine, 1L of beer; or 1L of wine, 2L of beer. Brining in tobacco products is liable to duties and customs declaration.         

Syria – 570ml of alcohol; 200 cigarettes or 50 cigarillos, or 25 cigars, or 250g of tobacco. 

Sierra Leone – 1L of spirits and 2L of dry wine; 200 cigarettes.

USA – allowances in certain states can be more stringent. Therefore, it is necessary to clarify it, entering a certain state. In most cases persons over 21 are allowed to bring in 1L of alcohol (spirits/beer/wine/ liquor); 200 cigarettes, 50 cigars or 2kg of smoking tobacco. Absinthe is prohibited for bringing in.      

Tajikistan – 2L of alcohol; 400g of tobacco products are allowed.

Taiwan – persons aged over 20 are allowed to bring in 1L of alcohol; 200 cigarettes, 25 cigars, 1 pound of tobacco.

Thailand – 1L of alcohol; 200 cigarettes or 250g of tobacco/cigars, or the mentioned tobacco products, which total weight shall not exceed 250g.

Tanzania – 1L of alcohol; 200 cigarettes or 250g of tobacco or 50 cigars.

Tonga – 1L of spirits, 2L of low-alcohol drinks; 200 cigarettes.

Tunisia – 1L of spirits, 2L of wine; 200 cigarettes, 50 cigars, 250g of tobacco.  

Turkey – 5L of any alcohol; 20 packs of cigarettes or 50 cigars, or 200g of tobacco.   

Uganda – 1 bottle of spirits; 200 cigarettes.

Uzbekistan – 1.5L of spirits, 2L of wine; 1 000 cigarettes or 1kg of tobacco products.

Uruguay – 2L of spirits; 4 cartons of cigarettes.

Ukraine – 1L of spirits, 2L of wine, 5L of beer; 200 cigarettes or 50 cigars, or 250g of tobacco products  

Fiji – 2L of spirits, 4L of wine or beer; 500 cigarettes or 500g of tobacco or cigars.  

Montenegro – 1L of alcohol; 200 cigarettes or 50 cigars, or 250g of tobacco. 

Switzerland – 1L of spirits, 2L of wine; 200 cigarettes or 50 cigars, or 250g of tobacco.  

Sri Lanka – 2L of alcohol; 200 cigarettes.

Ecuador – 1L of alcohol; 300 cigarettes or 50 cigars, or 200g of tobacco.

Ethiopia – 2L of alcohol; 200 cigarettes.

Republic of South Africa – 2L of wine, 1L of spirits; 200 cigarettes, 50 cigars and 250g of tobacco.   

Japan – for persons over the age of 20 it is allowed to bring in 3 bottles of spirits (no more than 760ml. each); 400 cigarettes, 100 cigars and no more than 500g of other types of tobacco.
